Austexx Announcement Welcomed

Media Release 25/02/08

Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd (HIAPL) has welcomed today’s announcement by Austexx that the development of a Direct Factory Outlet, DIY and bulky goods centre on airport land is proceeding.

The major development plan for the project was approved by the Commonwealth in October 2007 after a robust community consultation program.

HIAPL Chief Executive Wayne Tucker said he was very pleased that the project is proceeding and is looking forward to the future relationship with Austexx.

“It is worth noting that this is an important and positive decision for Tasmanian consumers who will enjoy greater retail choice and competitive prices.”

“Importantly many Tasmanians who travel interstate for this sort of shopping experience will now be able to do so at home which will support the Tasmanian economy. It will also provide visitors utilising the airport for their trip to Tasmania with an exciting shopping experience in close proximity to their arrival and departure point.”

Mr Tucker said it was expected that the DFO development would provide work for 1,200 construction jobs and 600 full-time retail positions.

Austexx Press Release

25 February 2008

Austexx is proceeding with its development of the Direct Factory Outlet and Homemaker Hub retail centre at Hobart Airport. Austexx will develop 10,000 m2 of DFO and over 30,000m2 of Homemaker Hub homemaker centre.

This will create over 50 shops in the DFO selling major national and international brands of fashion, footwear and accessories at discounted prices. Brands expected to be represented in the DFO include Giordano, Cotton On, Converse, FILA, Rivers and Table 8 Clearance.

The Homemaker Hub centre will accommodate up to 30 stores selling furniture, electrical goods, bedding and homewares. Brands expected to lease stores include Sheridan, House and Adairs.

Austexx Chief Executive Geoff Porz said that Austexx had worked within the parameters set by the Commonwealth Government when its approval for the development limited the DFO to 10,000m2. “We’ve reconfigured our layout within the DFO to ensure we provide a full range of shops across all categories offering branded product at discounts” said Geoff Porz. “We expect to start work in a few months and open next year. It’s well known that Tasmania is crying out for a better range of quality shops and DFO will bring that range to Hobart. The popular DFO format and Homemaker Hub will stop a lot of Tasmanian expenditure escaping out of the State”.

Tiger Flights Commence

Media Release 15/01/08

Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd (HIAPL) has welcomed today’s first flight by Australia’s newest low fare airline Tiger Airways into the State’s capital city airport.

HIAPL Chief Executive Wayne Tucker said the commencement of the Tiger Airways service was recognition of southern Tasmania’s importance as a tourist destination.

Mr Tucker said he was pleased that Tiger Airways had included Hobart on its route network so soon after commencing business in Australia.

“While there are obvious benefits for the operations of the airport through an increased frequency of flights, air travellers and Tasmania’s tourism industry will also gain considerable benefits,” he said.

“There will be more options for travellers and increased competition and access to low fares can only encourage more tourists to come to Tasmania

“We are excited to welcome another airline to Hobart and we share the company’s confidence that its low-fare offering will appeal to the travelling public.

“Hobart Airport has already benefited from the introduction of cheaper flights, and the recently completed and ongoing redevelopment works means we are well able to meet the requirements of a new airline and the anticipated increase in passenger movements.

Mr Tucker said HIAPL looked forward to further increase in services as the popularity of low cost fares and Tasmania as a tourist destination increased.

Hobart Airport Caters for Antarctic Flights this Summer

Released January 2008

After years of preparation and hard work by the Antarctic Airlink project team, flights commenced this summer between Hobart Airport and Wilkins Runway, about 70 kilometres from Casey Station.

The runway is constructed out of blue glacial ice capped with a compressed snow pavement. Airbus A319 aircraft takes just over four hours to travel the distance between the two continents and is capable of returning back to Hobart should weather conditions prevent safe landing. Hobart Airport is proud to be part of this new era of Antarctic transport.

Direct Factory Outlet Lands at Hobart Airport

A $100 million retail outlet is to be built on Holyman Avenue at Hobart Airport.

The complex will cover an area equal to approximately nine football fields, which will make it the largest of its kind in Australia. The retail outlets will include a Direct Factory Outlet of over 100 leading fashion brands, a Trade Do It Yourself Centre, a Homemaker Centre and a Bulky Goods Centre.

Similar outlets, located at Essendon and Brisbane Airports and in Melbourne and Sydney, have proved to be very popular with shoppers from all over their respective states.

The DFO developer Austexx and HIAPL are proud to be able to offer the same class of shopping experience to both Tasmanian people and visitors to the State.

Construction of the 71,000 m2 giant is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2007, with staged openings later that year and early 2008. The development will provide car parking for over 2000 cars and necessary road works will be undertaken to ensure that traffic flow into the Airport itself is not affected.

Hobart Airport Environment Strategy gets the OK

Media Release by Federal Minister for Transport and Regional Services, 14/11/05:

The Australian Government Minister for Transport and Regional Services, Warren Truss, today announced Australian Government approval of a new airport environment strategy for Hobart Airport.
Mr Truss said the strategy sets out Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd’s plans for managing the airport environment over the next five years.
Mr Truss made the announcement in his keynote address at the Australian Airports Association 24th National Convention in Hobart today.
“This strategy reinforces Hobart Airport’s commitment to continually improving the environmental health of the airport site by ensuring that an environmental management system is developed and effectively implemented,” he said.
“Hobart Airport has also started a process to ensure a collaborative approach is undertaken to manage environmentally significant areas.
“The airport is committed to pursuing a vegetation management agreement with the Tasmanian state government, which will contribute to the development of an appropriate and effective monitoring regime for the vegetation reserves that have been established in this strategy.”
Mr Truss said the environmental strategy did not deal with the management of noise generated by aircraft in flight, landing, taking off or taxiing, which was the responsibility of Airservices Australia.

“The operators of leased federal airports, such as Hobart Airport, are required to submit an environment strategy every five years for approval by the Australian Government,” he said.

Hobart Airport Terminal Upgrade - Stage 1

One of our most exciting developments - the upgrade of our domestic terminal - has been completed.

The new terminal layout encourages passengers and their families and friends to pass through the security screening point immediately after completing passenger check-in. Once inside the security screened area, everyone is able to enjoy a number of retail facilities as well as relaxed atmosphere of modern departure lounges.

This approach to the new design was chosen specifically in order to alleviate the screening congestion currently experienced at peak travelling times.

We strive to make our airport a pleasant place to visit!

New Airport Parking Facilities

Media Release 04/05/05

New parking facilities at Hobart Airport, including under-cover valet and streamlined public parking services, will open on Tuesday 10 May 2005.

Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd (HIAPL) Chief Executive Wayne Tucker said the new parking facilities, to be managed by Sultan Holdings, were part of the current multi-million dollar upgrade to cater for the major growth of air services in and out of Hobart.

Mr Tucker said public car parking was available for about 450 cars and included a professional valet service with secure under-cover and open parking for up to 320 vehicles.

New traffic arrangements would operate from Tuesday with a single entry point for all general public vehicles – four traffic lanes will be available at the entrance of the car park, two for arriving vehicles and two for departing vehicles, with pay stations at the exit point.

Payment at the exit stations would be fully automated, or users could still take advantage of the manual pre-payment service.

Parking is free for the first seven minutes to allow passenger pick up and drop off. The first half hour’s parking costs $2 and up to three hours costs $4.

The daily maximum charge is $12 and the maximum weekly rate is $65.

Secure outdoor valet parking is $10 per day and undercover valet parking is $15 per day.

Long-term valet parking is also available with the rate payable determined by a sliding scale, for example, outdoor valet parking for two days will cost $18, it will be $33 for four days, $50 for anything between five and 14 days and $80 for between 15 and 30 days.

Under the revised arrangements, only authorised vehicles will be able to park kerbside at to the terminal. This change addresses changing security and safety requirements.

Mr Tucker said the new fees and charges had been determined based on the anticipated use of valet parking and the requirement to free up the public car park for short-term users.

He said the new facility provided a number of affordable parking options that were considered reasonable in comparison to existing charges and to the new investment made by HIAPL in the car parking facilities.

“The new parking facilities complement the major redevelopment of the Hobart terminal and will enhance traffic movement and passenger safety and security.

“With the opening of the car park on Tuesday, the next phase of the $6.4 million expansion program will continue with work now focussing on the tarmac side of the terminal building.”

Mr Tucker said the expansion was necessary to cater for unprecedented air traffic, increased airline schedules and the introduction of bigger aircraft on the Hobart service.

Increased Airport Traffic Leads To Further Expansion At Hobart Airport

Media Release 25/02/05

Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd (HIAPL) has immediately brought forward a $1 million expansion of the terminal building due to unprecedented air traffic, increased airline schedules and the introduction of bigger airplanes.

HIAPL Chief Executive Wayne Tucker said five planes representing three airlines stayed overnight at Hobart Airport and departed the following morning within 40 minutes of each other.

“While HIAPL had originally planned to expand the terminal on the tarmac side of the building in four to five years time to take advantage of anticipated growth, the recent increases in air traffic and passenger movements mean we can undertake the terminal expansion immediately,” he said.

“The 360 square metre addition to the main terminal building will be the same height and in keeping with the design of the adjacent international terminal building.

“The additional space will not only provide us with increased capacity but arriving passengers will be greeted by a new and impressive modern façade.”

Mr Tucker said tenders to undertake the work, which would see the terminal extended by 360 square metres on the tarmac side of the building, would be called as soon as practical.

He said work would start after the $5.4 million redevelopment of the terminal building and car park was completed in mid to late March.

The works incorporate the provision of a single security screening point for passengers that will reduce queues at peak times, new retail outlets to be operated by nationally-recognised operators Delaware North and Australian Way, and new and refurbished toilets.

Traffic arrangements for airport users will also be enhanced.

Four traffic lanes will be constructed at the entrance to the car park, two for arriving vehicles and two for departing vehicles, with pay stations at this exit point.

Under the revised arrangements, vehicles will no longer be able to park kerbside at the terminal. This change will address national security and safety requirements.

A new passenger drop-off / pick-up zone will be established on the current site of the rent-a-car parking area adjacent to the existing pay station. A period of free parking (seven minutes) will be provided to allow for the use of this facility.

Mr Tucker said the current redevelopment works were on schedule to be completed by mid to late March with the retail outlets to be operational by mid to late April.

“The contractors have been working 24-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week for the past 10 weeks to ensure they meet the deadline,” he said.

“While there has been some negative comment while the works have been underway, generally feedback has been favourable, particularly most recently as airport users can see the new facilities taking shape.”

HIAPL Announced Development Proposal in June

Media Release 18/08/06

HIAPL Announced Development Proposal in June

Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd (HIAPL) announced in June this year that it had prepared a draft development plan for an outlet centre and bulky goods / homemaker retail centre on airport land.

Chief Executive Wayne Tucker said suggestions that HIAPL was secretly involved, as published in today’s Mercury, are wrong.

“In fact, advertisements that detailed our role and advised of the 90-day consultation process were published in the Mercury, and advised in a Tasmanian Government media release,” he said.

“It is a process requirement that the Commonwealth requires HIAPL, as the lessee of the land, to submit the Major Development Plan.

“In addition, although HIAPL submits the plan, Austexx is financing and building the facility proposed for land which will be leased to the developer by the airport.

“The major retail outlet development that has been proposed has been welcomed by the Tasmanian Government, but the Government plays no role in the investment.”

“It is important to note that HIAPL is a State-owned company operating independently of government under Corporation’s Law.”

Mr Tucker said he was surprised to read that HIAPL’s involvement in the development was secret and had been hidden for “…nine months”.

“The Mercury report appears to be nothing more than a rehash of old news,” he said.

“It should come as no surprise to anyone that the airport is involved in the development as it is proposed for airport land and I attended the original announcement which was attended by the Mercury and other media.”

Hobart Airport to Celebrate 50th Anniversary

Media Release 12/10/06

The Hobart Airport is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

To mark the occasion, Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd (HIAPL) has commissioned Hobart historian Lindy Scripps to prepare an historic booklet.

“I’m very interested in the early days, how the airport itself has changed since then and also how the experience of using the airport has evolved,” she said.

“I particularly want to hear from people with interesting stories about key events in the airport’s history.”

Ms Scripps said sourcing historic photos and anecdotes from the earliest days of the airport’s operations was an important part of the research process.

Ms Scripps, who has worked as a full time historian since 1988, said hearing first hand from those people who had either worked at the airport or traveled through it would provide useful insight and colour.

Ms Scripps has researched historic sites throughout Tasmania including the West Coast forests, Maria Island, King Island and the Huon.

Published work by Mrs Scripps includes “Capital Port”, a history of the Marine Board of Hobart published in 2000 and a number of studies for the Hobart City Council, the latest the history of Cornelian Bay published in March this year.

People wishing to contribute to the historic booklet should contact HIAPL on telephone 6216 1600 or mail information, including their contact details, to Box 1 Strachan Street Cambridge TAS 7170 or email: info@hobartairpt.com.au.
